Botox for Bunny Lines: What You Need to Know

Daily activities and interactions cause you to have repeated facial movements that’ll eventually  wrinkle your noses and give you bunny lines. While this is naturally a part of aging, some people can really feel self-conscious about these lines  and resort to cosmetic treatments to reduce their appearance, like Botox injections.

So what do you need to know about Botox for bunny lines? First, you have to know what Botox does to bunny lines, how many units of Botox you need, and how much they’ll cost. You’ll also have to know proper practices before, during, and after the procedure. If you’re considering having Botox units injected into your bunny lines, it’s best to consult a trusted provider to make sure you’re getting the right procedure, and ultimately, getting the results that you want.

Can Botox Treat Bunny Lines?

Yes, Botox injections are one of the minimally invasive procedures that can reduce the appearance of wrinkles, including bunny lines. By limiting your facial muscle movement, you’re less likely to see bunny lines with time and repeated treatment. With an experienced Botox provider, you can freeze your nasalis muscle (the muscle responsible for the formation of bunny lines) while still getting a natural-looking appearance.

What Are Bunny Lines?

Bunny lines or bunny wrinkles are the facial wrinkles you see on either side of your nose when you wrinkle it. These nose wrinkles are mainly caused by the upper fibers of your nasalis muscle, but it can also be caused by the procerus muscle (which also causes horizontal frown lines) pushing downwards and bunching up the nasalis muscles. These muscles move at certain facial expressions.

How Many Units of Botox Do You Need for Bunny Lines?

The number of Botox units used to treat your bunny lines can vary. Factors like the severity of your facial wrinkles and the size of the treatment area can affect how much Botox you’ll need. The dose range usually starts at 2 units of Botox on each side of the nose. This can be enough for most patients, but some may require more. For a more precise estimate, schedule a consultation with a cosmetic doctor.

How Much Does Botox for Bunny Lines Cost?

The price of Botox can range from $10 to $15 per unit. So, if you’re going to have 2 units of Botox per side, expect to pay around $40 to $60 for Botox injections for bunny lines. This doesn’t include the additional fees that your provider may charge you, and the total cost of the procedure can vary depending where the injections are sourced.

Botox injections are just one of many botulinum toxin injections available. Botulinum toxin is an ingredient that, when injected into your muscles, can freeze your muscles by blocking signals from your nervous system that triggers muscle movement. Botox is only one of these types, and during your initial consultation, your doctor will recommend the best botulinum toxin type for you.

Muscle movement can create dynamic wrinkles like bunny lines by folding and creasing the skin attached to your facial muscles. When you’re younger, your skin elasticity allows your skin to spring back taut without any signs of folds and creases on your skin, which is due to the amount of collagen and elastin produced by your skin. But as you get older, your skin loses a lot of its nutrients and becomes less elastic. As a result, the folds and creases start to leave marks on your skin.

The usage of Botox injections can prevent muscle movement that can fold and crease your skin and create dynamic wrinkles. By freezing your nasalis muscles, you can minimize the appearance of bunny lines caused by wrinkling your nose.

Procedure for Botox for Bunny Lines

Before getting your Botox injections for bunny lines, you’ll have to undergo an initial consultation with a cosmetic doctor. This is to see if Botox injections are the right solution for your bunny lines and if you’re a good candidate for Botox procedures.

If you have other facial wrinkles around your face that you want to treat, you can also opt to receive additional treatments there. Some of the other wrinkles Botox can treat include:

  • Marionette lines
  • Horizontal lines on your forehead or forehead wrinkles (glabellar frown lines)
  • Crow’s feet
  • Smile lines
  • Scowl lines or frown lines
  • Nasolabial fold

However, keep in mind that this can cost extra Botox units. Only a physician, cosmetic doctor, or any licensed healthcare practitioner can administer Botox, but it’s always best to choose an experienced injector to give you the best results.

Once your doctor finds that you can continue getting Botox and you decide to proceed, expect a fairly quick treatment that can take less than an hour. First, your provider may use a topical anesthetic to numb the treatment area. This is done to significantly help reduce the discomfort of the injection. They will then inject the right amount of Botox into the nasalis muscles on the sides of your nose.

You may also opt to treat your procerus muscle in between your eyebrows since it indirectly causes your nasalis muscles to fold (and directly causes frown lines and glabellar lines/forehead lines). If you opt to have other facial wrinkles treated, your doctor will perform the additional treatments and repeat the process in the other injection sites.

Preparing for the Botox Procedure

Prior to your Botox injection, there are some things you can do to minimize the pain and the side effects that can happen during or after your procedure. Before your treatment, make sure you:

  • Avoid drinking alcohol at least one week before your appointment. Alcohol in your blood can increase the risk of bruising and can make the injection feel more painful.
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory drugs at least one week before the procedure. These medicines can thin your blood, which can also promote bleeding and bruising after your treatment. If you’re taking any other medication, tell your doctor during your initial consultation.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an active skin infection. If you have an active skin infection or are taking medication for acne, psoriasis, cold sores, etc., tell your doctor. Your Botox injections may be rescheduled until after your skin has fully healed.
  • Avoid wearing makeup. Your face will be sterilized before the procedure, so avoid wearing makeup since this will be removed.

Side Effects After Injecting Botox Around Your Nose

Botox injections for bunny lines require little to no downtime. However, there are common side effects that can cause pain and discomfort a few days after your treatment. These side effects include:

  • Swelling around your nose
  • Bruising in the injection sites
  • Bleeding
  • Mild pain or discomfort
  • Redness and irritation
  • Stinging or numbness
  • A feeling of stiffness around your nose

Most of these minor side effects are caused by the injection triggering your body’s inflammatory response. Bruising can take up to two weeks to completely disappear and fade away. To manage these side effects, you can use home remedies like ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers. Practicing a facial muscle exercise can help the botulinum toxin set onto your facial muscles.

Seek medical attention if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • Difficulty breathing, speaking, or swallowing
  • Muscle spasms
  • Muscle weakness
  • Fatigue, nausea, and dizziness
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction to Botox

It can take up to 14 days to see visible changes around your nose. Botox is temporary and can last for up to 6 months. To maintain the effects of Botox, it’s best to have maintenance appointments every 6 months to keep your muscles frozen. After consistent Botox use, your muscle mass around the area will shrink from non-use to the point that it can take a while for your muscle strength to be regained even after you miss your maintenance appointments.
